An Artist Beginning
So, a little while back, I was hanging out in my studio, just doing my thing, when someone popped in. We were chatting about my work, and they asked me something I'd never really considered: 'What got you into doing portraits?' I was stumped, to be honest.
Thinking back, the earliest thing that springs to mind is growing up in a Jehovah's Witness home. We had this magazine called 'Watch Tower,' full of stories and images about… well, life, the end times, all that. And I remember this one picture, a mother and her kids running, screaming scared, while asteroids were crashing down around them.
Now, the end of the world stuff was pretty common, but what really got me was how the artist captured the emotions in their faces. I started using those magazines as, believe it or not, my reference material. That's when I really started focusing on portraits and figures.
It's funny, isn't it? I always wonder what people see when they look at my work because, of course, I see something different. It's like the artist who drew those images for the magazine, they probably never imagined a kid would look at their art and find a spark, a connection that would eventually lead me into the art world.
And that little spark, well, it grew into a journey of creativity, shaping my life and bringing me here to share my work with you the viewer.
My Art Mission
Growing up, I was taught the world was ending before I could even dream about my future. Those early years were all about waiting for something that never came - instead of living, I was just anticipating an ending. This mindset, combined with my working-class background, led me down a path where I found myself as a 19-year-old high school dropout working as a janitor.
But here's what I learned: beliefs are powerful, and they can either hold you back or propel you forward. It wasn't until I decided to take control of my life that things started to change.
My art is about breaking those invisible chains.
I want to create work that speaks to anyone who's ever been told they can't, won't, or shouldn't. My paintings aren't just colors and shapes - they're invitations. Invitations to look beyond what you've been told, to challenge the stories you've inherited, and to believe in your own potential.
Every piece I create is a reminder: Your past doesn't define your future. Your limitations are often just stories you've been told and stories can be rewritten.
So whether you're an artist, a dreamer, or someone who's been told "no" too many times, this is for you. My art is about possibility. About proving that your potential is bigger than your past. No matter where you come from, or where you've been.
